Our Special
Collections
|
Testifying to the great
collaborative efforts of
quilters everywhere, BQE this
year is fortunate to have three
"challenge" exhibits as our
Special Collections. Quilters
challenge themselves by giving
everyone in the group a common
theme, or a designated size, or
specific fabric choices, or all
of those guidelines.
The first
group,
Bee Arty,
created quilts especially for BQE 2009; their
theme is Everglades: River of
Grass. Bee Arty is composed of 12
Broward
County quilters; all are members of Quilting in the Pines. They have been
exhibiting together for four years, and have had
group shows at Florida International University,
Broward County Library and The Glass Gallery in
Pembroke Pines; for the latter venue, they
created a special piece entitled "Bee Arty's
World".

Our second exhibit is
Keepsake
Challenge Quilts,
The Keepsake Quilting Traveling
Quilt Exhibit showcases many of the
first and second place prize-winning
quilts from Challenges held over the
years. The quilts are on tour
continually at quilt shows,
festivals, guild meetings and art
exhibits all over the United States
where quilters have the exciting
opportunity to see these wonderful
quilts "in person."
The Exhibit currently features
twenty 30" x 30" quilts. These
quilts are from ten of our Challenge
contests. A framed poster describing
each Challenge is included along
with an introductory poster. These
18" x 24" posters show swatches of
the six fabrics included in the
Challenge Medley™ plus a description
of the Challenge theme.
In a Keepsake Quilting Challenge the
entries may be original or
traditional in design, generally
pieced or appliquéd, embellished in
any way and hand or machine quilted.
They must have a finished size of
30" x 30" and must use at least four
fabrics from the Challenge Medley.
Up to two fabrics of the contestants
choice may also be added. |
Our third exhibit includes the work of South
Florida fiber artists.
Quilters' Innovative Design (QID),
has been meeting and producing individual and
group work for over 15 years. This is QID’s
third appearance as a BQE special exhibit, this
year, their challenge was to create a small work
of fiber art inspired by a poem. The exhibitors
are:
Barb Stewart, Peggy Montesano, Annie Weinstein,
Yvonne Suutari, Kathy Stubbs Ward, Sandra Pike,
Linda Lewis and Susanne McCoy.
