2019 Quilt entry rules
All quilt entries must be constructed of fabric, have three layers, and be quilted by hand or machine. No tied quilts or comforters will be accepted. No “cheater cloth” or preprinted quilts will be accepted.
No quilts previously exhibited or judged in a Broward or Palm Beach County quilt show since March 2017 are eligible for entry. Please refer to footnote 1 for additional information.
Entrant’s name must be permanently attached to the back of the quilt. Whipstitch a piece of fabric over the label to cover the label information.
All quilts must include a four-inch hanging sleeve at the top edge. Bed-sized quilts must have the sleeve attached no more than 86 inches from the bottom edge of the quilt so that the quilt will not touch the floor.
Each entry must be submitted in its own cloth casing, such as a pillowcase. This casing must be permanently marked with the entrant’s name, address, and phone number. No exceptions will be made.
Attach to the quilt entry form: one nonreturnable, full-view color photo of your entry for identification purposes. On the back of the photo, add your name, the name of the quilt, and an arrow indicating the direction of the top of the quilt.
Entry forms, pictures and payment must be received by Friday, February 8, 2019, at midnight. Submissions may be made via mail or online via browardquiltexpo.com. No entries will be accepted after this deadline.
A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 per quilt for members of sponsoring guilds and $25 per quilt for all other entrants must accompany each entry form. Submit only one form per quilt entry.
Your Artist’s Statement must be 50 words or less. Excess language will be truncated.
Quilt collection will take place on Monday, February 11, 2019, between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at ArtServe, located at 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. Please be sure to pick up your receipt for each quilt you enter. Please see instructions and map on our website.
If the entry is shipped, it must be received by February 8, 2019. The cost for return shipping and liability insurance is the sole responsibility of the entrant. Enclose a prepaid shipping label or a mailing label with a check made out to Broward Quilt Expo, Inc. for the cost of return shipping. Please do not use foam peanuts as a filler! Questions? Use our contact form. Shipping address: Broward Quilt Expo, Inc. c/o Judy Kaplan, 8691 Tierra Lago Cove, Lake Worth, FL 33467.
No ribbons or awards may be displayed on or near your quilt unless awarded at the current BQE show.
Entrants will have the option of making their quilt available for sale at the show. If you decide to make your entry available for sale, Broward Quilt Expo will handle the sale and take a 15% fee based on the price of the quilt, which you will determine. Minimum sale price for judged quilt entries is $200. You will be required to complete a consignment agreement.
Broward Quilt Expo reserves the right to refuse to hang any quilt that requires special handling, exhibits poor-quality construction, has been misrepresented by the photos, is soiled or stained, has strong odors, or does not adhere to the entry rules and size restrictions. Broward Quilt Expo also reserves the right to change the category of any entry if deemed appropriate.
Payment of your entry fee includes judging and you will receive a copy of the judge’s notes when your quilt is returned. Your entry fee does not guarantee that your quilt will be hung in our show. We will endeavor to hang all acceptable entries; however due to space limitations, we can only guarantee that we will have space to hang the first 200 acceptable entries received. It is our absolute intention to hang every quilt entered, if we have space! Available space is dependent on the individual sizes and the number of entries.
Quilt pickup will take place on Monday March 11, between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the War Memorial Auditorium. You or your representative must present the receipt that you were given at quilt collection to pick-up your quilt(s). Mailed entries will be shipped back to owners within 10 days after the end of the 2019 show.
By entering, you give permission to Broward Quilt Expo, Inc. to photograph your quilt for use in our show book, event-related publicity, on our website, and any other use directly related to our event.
BQE assumes no liability of any kind for damaged, misplaced, or lost quilts/personal property during the judging or show. Quilts will be handled with the utmost care.
Entry Rules Footnotes
For clarification, we define a quilt show as any competition that has a quilt category (or categories), that is judged, in which ribbons and/or prizes are awarded, and that is displayed to the public. Therefore, any quilts exhibited or judged at such quilt shows during the stated time period will be deemed ineligible for our current show. (note added October 26, 2018.)
