Definition of quilt. We define a quilt for this show as two layers of fabric with a filling that is stitched together with lines or a pattern. Quilting may be done by hand or by machine. Tied quilts do not meet the definition of a quilt for this show. Quilts do not need to have a sleeve for our show.
Size. Our outdoor display is best suited to larger quilts; minimum perimeter of 225 (or very close to that).
Date and Maker. Your quilt may have been made at any time, and the entrant does not need to be the maker of the quilt. (For example, if you own an antique quilt, you may submit it.)
Provenance. Submissions must have some tie to Broward County, for example (but not exclusively):
Maker is a member of a Broward County quilt guild
Quilt was made in Broward County
Quilt subject is relevant to Broward County or to the state of Florida
Limits and fees. Each entrant may submit up to three quilts. Entry is free to members of guilds which are a part of the Broward Quilt Expo organization. Entry fee is $10 per person (not per quilt) for nonmembers. Fees are not refundable. Link to pay fee.
Not acceptable for this show. “Raggy” quilts, quilts made from predominantly preprinted panels (without majority of piecing, applique, or embroidery) or non-traditional fabric material (plastics, tarps, etc.). This show hangs quilts that are square or rectangular. We cannot hang quilts which do not have right angles and straight edges—we cannot hang quilts whose shapes are round, jagged, or unusual.
Also not acceptable for this show. Quilts that will be entered for judging in BQE 2019.
Quilt Sales. We will not be selling quilts at this show. However, if you are planning on consigning your quilt for sale at BQE in March 2019, we would like to add a tag which indicates that the quilt can be purchased there.
Submission. Go to browardquiltexpo.com/2019airing to register your submission. One registration form must be completed for each quilt. The “quilt description” part of your form will appear in a program and/or tag for quilts on display. This is your opportunity to explain techniques used, design inspiration/process and the STORY of your quilt. A good story may enhance your submission during selection. A photo must be included (can be of the finished quilt top prior to quilting).
Liability Release. Quilts in this show will be hung outdoors and are subject to outdoor elements (wind, dust, dirt, smoke, pollen, etc), associated with hanging outdoors on buildings). We can’t guarantee that your quilt will hang if any environmental conditions are prohibitive. We will only hang quilts if it is safe for the quilts, our volunteers, and our visitors. Quilters enter their quilts at their own risk. Insurance is the sole responsibility of the entrant. Broward Quilt Expo and its sponsors, Stranahan House Museum and its sponsors assume no liability for loss or damage to the quilts. Reasonable care is taken to prevent loss or damage to any quilt. Each exhibitor will be required to sign a Liability Release indicating that you are aware of the potential hazards of your quilt hanging outdoors. An adult is required to sign the release for any exhibitor under the age of 18.
Selection: Selection will be made by a jury of BQE Board members, committee chairs, and volunteers. Selection will be made from photos submitted. We will be looking for a variety of quilting styles, a wide representation of makers, and quality in design and workmanship. BQE reserves the right to refuse any entry for any reason and all decisions of the Board will be final.
